General Rules and FAQs

Unless otherwise stated, below are the rules for all Shank City Volleyball tournaments.

  • If you need to withdraw from the tournament for any reason, the following policies apply:

    • 100% refunds (minus fees) up until the refund cutoff date and time.

    • No refunds after the refund cutoff date and time.

  • We play through light rain. If play is deemed unsafe a tournament must be cancelled, the policies are as follows:

    • Tournament is cancelled anytime prior to the start of pool play: 100% refund

    • Tournament is cancelled anytime during pool play: 50% refund

    • Tournament is cancelled anytime during playoffs: prizes awarded based on pool play of remaining playoff teams

  • If your team loses a player for any reason (injury, kicked out, emergency, quit, etc.), the following rules apply:

    • Lose a player during pool play

      • Your team may find a substitute but you will not advance to playoffs even if all teams were scheduled to advance.

      • Triples/Quads: Your team may compete with down a player for the duration of the tournament, including playoffs (if you make it).

    • Lose a player during playoffs

      • Your team may not find a substitute but may compete down a player (triples/quads) for the duration of the playoffs. 

    • Your team is only left with one player

      • Your team forfeits the tournament.

  • It is expected that all teams play at the level of their best player. Skill levels are as follows:

    • Open: Elite-level competition. Players play and/or train year-round. Players have trained extensively on individual volleyball skills. Excellent setting with high-velocity attacks. Float, jump float, and/or high-velocity jump serving. Pinpoint passing.

    • AA/A: Advanced level competition. Players have trained on individual volleyball skills. Advanced setting and serving. Good defense.

    • BB: Intermediate level competition. Players have limited training on individual volleyball skills. Inconsistent passing. Consistent three-hit rallies.

      • Unless otherwise noted, hand-setting and jump-serving are not allowed in BB.

  • Number of teams advancing to single elimination playoffs depends on total number of teams registered in each division. Note that not all rounds may consist of a full match.

    General rules of thumb are as follows:

    • 4-6 team divisions: all teams advance to playoffs

    • 7 team divisions: overall 6 & 7 seed from pool play will play a 1-set play-in game, winner and top 5 teams advance to playoffs

    • 8+ team divisions: top 3 teams from each pool advance to playoffs

  • Prizes are awarded based on playoff finishes. Late fees and processing fees are not included in the prize pool. General rules of thumb are as follows:

    • Payouts

      • Divisions with 4 teams: only 1st place receives prizes

      • Divisions with 5+ teams: 1st and 2nd place receives prizes

    • Prize Pools

      • Open: 100% cash payout + merch

      • AA, A, & BB: 70-80% payout (cash + merch)

        • BB: 1st place receives money back or merch (to help avoid sandbagging)

  • Never.

  • All tournament registration and payment must be done via Volleyball Life prior to the registration deadline.

    In order to participate in any of our tournaments, each player must also have a silver-level AVP membership. This is separate from Volleyball Life and must be done here: https://avp.com/membership/

  • The male and female who's serve lasts the longest time in the air while landing the ball over the net and within the court each win a prize. Each tournament participant gets one free attempt while any subsequent attempt cost $1 for each via Venmo (no cash).

    • Only tournament participants are allowed an attempt

    • No transfers of attempts

    • Only serves that are legal in actual tournaments are allowed (no bumps, punts, etc.)

    • If you launch your ball nowhere near the court, you go get it


Policies

Terms and Conditions

By participating in any Shank City Volleyball activity, the participate acknowledges and accepts the following terms and conditions:

Shank City Volleyball reserves the right to deny admittance or terminate the membership if the participant exhibits anti-social, inappropriate or disruptive behavior or attempts to use these services for improper, immoral, illegal or exploitative purposes. In addition, any member who knowingly provides false information will be terminated from Shank City Volleyball. Shank City Volleyball reserves the right to refuse any individual or team without explanation. Upon registration, Shank City Volleyball league rules and regulations are to be followed by any and all team members and individuals.

All participants in any Shank City Volleyball league accept the following TERMS AND CONDITIONS. Additionally, sports league participants must agree to our waiver of liability to be allowed to participate. Failure or refusal to waive liability will result in removal from league and void any refund.

Shank City Volleyball reserves the right to change specific league locations and operating times as necessary due to any required scheduling changes.

All Shank City Volleyball activity participants must have their own health insurance prior to participating in Shank City Volleyball activities.

All registration fees must be paid in full as listed by each sport and/or event. Verbal registrations will not be accepted nor be considered as confirmation for holding a team or individual spot without individual full payment or team deposit.

Liability Waiver

I recognize and accept that participation in organized sports involves the risk and/or death or injury and that I am the only person responsible for my own safety. By engaging in any activities offered by Shank City Volleyball, I freely accept and fully assume all inherent risks, dangers and hazards and the possibility of personal injury, death, property damage or loss resulting therefrom. I do hereby absolve, release and waive any and all liability claims or demands against Shank City Volleyball, its officers, directors, leaders, and each and every member thereof, which may arise out of or be related to any injury, damage or pecuniary loss to me or any member of my family by reason of involvement in any club sponsored activities. Therefore, intending to be legally bound, I hereby waive and anyone claiming through me that right to sue Shank City Volleyball, its officers, event workers or members for any injury and or/death while taking part in, preparing for, or traveling to and from any Shank City Volleyball activities. This waiver applies to any negligent act or omission and to any intentional act intended to promote my safety. I hereby acknowledge Shank City Volleyball acts solely as agent carrying out services and assumes no responsibility for injury, loss or damage to persons or property, nor for faults or defaults of companies or those carrying out services; nor accidents, injuries, delays, cancellations; changes due to weather; baggage, lodging, insufficient participation, or any circumstances whatsoever beyond the control of Shank City Volleyball.
