General Rules and FAQs
Unless otherwise stated, below are the rules for all Shank City Volleyball tournaments.

If you need to withdraw from the tournament for any reason, the following policies apply:
100% refunds (minus fees) up until the refund cutoff date and time.
No refunds after the refund cutoff date and time.

We play through light rain. If play is deemed unsafe a tournament must be cancelled, the policies are as follows:
Tournament is cancelled anytime prior to the start of pool play: 100% refund
Tournament is cancelled anytime during pool play: 50% refund
Tournament is cancelled anytime during playoffs: prizes awarded based on pool play of remaining playoff teams

If your team loses a player for any reason (injury, kicked out, emergency, quit, etc.), the following rules apply:
Lose a player during pool play
Your team may find a substitute but you will not advance to playoffs even if all teams were scheduled to advance.
Triples/Quads: Your team may compete with down a player for the duration of the tournament, including playoffs (if you make it).
Lose a player during playoffs
Your team may not find a substitute but may compete down a player (triples/quads) for the duration of the playoffs.
Your team is only left with one player
Your team forfeits the tournament.

It is expected that all teams play at the level of their best player. Skill levels are as follows:
Open: Elite-level competition. Players play and/or train year-round. Players have trained extensively on individual volleyball skills. Excellent setting with high-velocity attacks. Float, jump float, and/or high-velocity jump serving. Pinpoint passing.
AA/A: Advanced level competition. Players have trained on individual volleyball skills. Advanced setting and serving. Good defense.
BB: Intermediate level competition. Players have limited training on individual volleyball skills. Inconsistent passing. Consistent three-hit rallies.
Unless otherwise noted, hand-setting and jump-serving are not allowed in BB.

Number of teams advancing to single elimination playoffs depends on total number of teams registered in each division. Note that not all rounds may consist of a full match.
General rules of thumb are as follows:
4-6 team divisions: all teams advance to playoffs
7 team divisions: overall 6 & 7 seed from pool play will play a 1-set play-in game, winner and top 5 teams advance to playoffs
8+ team divisions: top 3 teams from each pool advance to playoffs

Prizes are awarded based on playoff finishes. Late fees and processing fees are not included in the prize pool. General rules of thumb are as follows:
Payouts
Divisions with 4 teams: only 1st place receives prizes
Divisions with 5+ teams: 1st and 2nd place receives prizes
Prize Pools
Open: 100% cash payout + merch
AA, A, & BB: 70-80% payout (cash + merch)
BB: 1st place receives money back or merch (to help avoid sandbagging)

All tournament registration and payment must be done via Volleyball Life prior to the registration deadline.
In order to participate in any of our tournaments, each player must also have a silver-level AVP membership. This is separate from Volleyball Life and must be done here: https://avp.com/membership/

The male and female who's serve lasts the longest time in the air while landing the ball over the net and within the court each win a prize. Each tournament participant gets one free attempt while any subsequent attempt cost $1 for each via Venmo (no cash).
Only tournament participants are allowed an attempt
No transfers of attempts
Only serves that are legal in actual tournaments are allowed (no bumps, punts, etc.)
If you launch your ball nowhere near the court, you go get it
